If your family is like most, your baby’s first stroller will be one of your most important initial purchases. Strollers or prams provide your child a safe, comfortable environment for getting out into the world. You need that mobility, and so does your child.
Here are some tips for finding the best baby stroller to meet your family’s requirements. For more information, see www.babypramsstrollers.net.
Because newborn babies can’t sit up on their own, they need strollers that let them lie flat on their backs. Be sure you don’t try to use a non-reclining stroller before your child is able to sit up without help.
For newborns, there are four different stroller types. Each can provide the safety and comfort your baby needs during this important time.
The first and most affordable option is a lightweight seat-carrier frame to which you attach your infant car seat. A big advantage of this stroller type is not waking your baby when you’re getting in or out of your vehicle. The main disadvantage is that this is the most temporary stroller solution, because the frame can no longer be used when your child outgrows the infant car seat and graduates to a toddler car seat, at about 12 months. But there is another significant plus. Purchasing a seat-carrier frame won’t break your budget and will buy you some time until you know more about your ongoing baby-wheel needs.
The second option is a standard or traditional stroller with full-recline capability. These are the workhorses of the stroller world, providing comfort, durability and stability. Designed with most everyday activities in mind, standard strollers can serve children for all of their stroller years, from newborn to almost-ready-for-kindergarten. Standard strollers have the broadest range of features, styles, colors and price points. The only real drawback is that they can be a bit bulky in tight quarters.
Combo strollers, which combine a pram with a stroller, are also designed with the potential to see your baby through the strolling years. Adaptability and versatility are the hallmarks here. A combo stroller comes complete with a chassis, bassinet and reversible seat. At first, when your newborn needs to lie flat, you can attach your infant car seat to the chassis or use the stroller’s own bassinet. Some models also offer a fully reclining seat with leg holes that close, providing yet another secure option for your little one. And as your child grows, you can shift to using the stroller’s seat attachment in upright position. Understandably, combo strollers tend to cost more, because they offer such a variety of rides.
Travel Systems. If you plan to travel extensively with your baby, this fourth type could be your best choice. Travel systems combine a stroller with an infant car seat. Travel strollers are designed with air travel and long family car trips in mind. Like the seat-carrier frame, you use the car seat snapped into the stroller until your baby can sit up. But unlike the bare frame, the travel system is also a stroller that can be used without the car seat as your baby grows. The disadvantage is that initially you will be pushing both the stroller and the car seat. However, the travel stroller’s flexibility may compensate for its added bulk.
When you’re considering a newborn stroller, it’s crucial to pick one that ensures your baby’s safety and comfort. Number one on your list of safety features is an adequate restraint system. To keep your baby in place, look for either an integrated safety belt and crotch strap or, better yet, a five-point harness that will do even more to keep your baby secure. The restraint system should be strong, durable and adjustable, so you can keep your growing baby snugly tucked in. Be certain the buckles are easy for you to fasten and challenging for little fingers to undo.
For all stroller types, you need a good parking brake that locks two wheels for extra safety. Look for one that is convenient to operate. You must also have a canopy or shield for protecting your baby, both from sunlight and from rain or snow.
Above all, take your time. A stroller decision shouldn’t be made on impulse. It’s important to be sure you’ve found the wheels that will keep your precious new baby safe, secure and comfortable. The dividend for choosing wisely will be many hours of pleasurable strolling.
