The Great Dog Training Deliberation - To Crate Train Or Not To Crate Train?

by Terry Zinndell

There is still a lot of debate among pet owners as to whether crate training dogs is a good idea. Crating, if you’re unfamiliar with the term, is the practice of placing your dog in a cage for a period of time during the day or night. The cage is generally made from metal or plastic and is very small ” barely large enough for the dog to turn around in.

On the pro-crating side, people who use crate training say that it is a place which a dog can call its own ” a refuge from unpleasant sounds and the rambunctious behavior of children. As mentioned above, they also argue in favor of crating a dog as part of the housebreaking process, averring that this trains a dog to wait until they are taken outside to eliminate.

Those who oppose crate training argue that crating a dog prevents it from acting in accordance with its instincts, keeping the animal from exploring the sights, sounds and smells of its environment.

The no-crating crowd point to those instances where puppies will go ahead and soil themselves while in the crate, despite the arguments made by the proponents of crate training. They make the argument that crate training is really more about the owner’s convenience than it is the best interests of their pet.

Both sides want only the best for their pets and the arguments made by both sides have merit. There has been some research into crate training, but there is no hard and fast answer, other than that if done with care and common sense crate training can be beneficial to some dogs and has no ill effect.

No one, not even the biggest backers of crate training would say that keeping a dog in a crate for an extended period of time is a good thing. You should never keep your dog in a crate for more than four hours ” any longer than this is really too much time to deprive an animal of the ability to move freely and to take care of nature’s call.

There is also the concern that a caged dog can accidentally injure itself. It’s important to make sure that the dog’s collar will not snag on the cage and that the cage is free of sharp edges, as well as that the cage is sturdy enough not to tip over or break when pushed by your dog.

Pets which are accustomed to the crate do however tend to travel better than do others. Since they are already accustomed to spending time in close quarters, they’ll be far calmer when traveling.

Many pet owners maintain that unless you are making a permanent relocation you should leave your pet at home, since they will be happier in a familiar place. If you need to take your pet along on a trip, make sure to use a very well built cage which won’t tip and will keep things from getting in, not just out.

There’s not going to be an agreement on crate training in the near future; that much is certain. It’s best to decide for yourself. Try crating your dog for a couple of weeks, followed by leaving the door of the crate open and let your dog vote with their feet ” do they steer clear of the crate or do they choose it as a favored spot for their naps? Let your dog have a say and you’ll have a happier pet.

The Firm, Dependable Blue Heeler

by Troy Richardson

The Blue Heeler, also named the Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Heeler, Halls Heeler, and Queensland Heeler, is a hardworking breed of dog that was originally bred in Australia for herding cattle. It is solid, reliable, well-muscled and very industrious. Because it is a working, herding breed, the Blue Heeler is not suited to life alone in the backyard.

Ranked tenth in the list of the most intelligent dogs in the world, Blue Heelers may get agitated if they aren’t given plenty of activities! This dog is quite partial to keeping itself active. Because want being busy, Blue Heelers love being outside rather than being kept indoors.

Being devoted protectors at heart, Blue Heelers are always vigilant. Their obedience levels soar high, as they are brave and adept. Because of these practical, exceptional traits, they are outstanding guard dogs.

The Blue Heelers ability and versatility is clearly seen in its form. The normal stance of the Australian Cattle Dog shows no cracks in its veneer of quickness, no vestiges of imperfection, and symmetry and poise are always conspicuous in its frame. It is accepted that even in Heelers not bred for herding, there must always be the presence of lean, hard muscles and a beautifully athletic form.

Most Heelers are blue”caused by the mixing of grey, white, and black hairs all over its body”giving it the name Blue Heeler. The coat, which covers a wiry, compact body, is dense and sports coarse, almost oily hair with a slight ruff. The tail is tipped in white, and the winter undercoat is fine and almost woolly.

One of the most distinct physical features of the Australian Cattle Dog is a patch over one or both eyes, called a mask. It may be referred to as a single or half mask”covering one eye”or a double or full mask if it covers both eyes. If a Heeler does not possess this distinctive marking, it is called or dubbed plain-faced.

Consistent with the temperament of most working dogs, Blue Heelers have high levels of energy and alert, active minds. Their dominance, territorial and intelligence levels are also very high, rendering them best suited for masters who are dedicated to training them and showing them whos alpha dog. Blue Heelers are extremely easy to train, and work very well with trainers who are able to give them firm orders to obey and challenging activities or jobs to fulfill.

This dog is an excellent herder, matched by few in terms of stamina and their skill in working the stock firmly and silently. Their determination is one-of-a-kind, and their readiness to drive cattle across immense distances even in adverse conditions is something few dogs are capable of. If there is one thing one needs to be assured of when looking at the Blue Heeler, it is that this sturdy, spunky, and smart dog is steadfast and faithful to the end.

The Lhasa Apso and its Reputable Stubborness and Free-Spirited Trait

by Jason Grieves

Tibet, recognized as the roof of the world, is situated in the Eastern region with an uncommonly leveled mountain ranges and severe winters and summers. This exact vicious-conditioned spot is where the pee wee, adorable, and wiry- coated Lhasa Apso originated from. This group, flowing and heavy with long, condensed hairs which come in colors of an array of beige, red, grey, brown, white and black, existed for 2000 years amongst the serene and walled structures of Tibetan monasteries.

Their tiny bodies, looking so frail and weak, are actually designed to exactly withstand the harsh conditions of the region. They have: a well-rounded and condensed body that preserves heat inside during freezing temperatures, a thick and heavy set of long hairs that cover their bodies and eyes from unforgiving sunrays and ferocious winds, and short but quick and strong legs that are great for climbing and maneuvering on the rocky mountains. Their pelt is long and straight and a bit course on top but the inner fur are of medium length and are softer.

This charming breed is innately distrustful to strangers but is nonetheless pleasantly placid, chirpy, and independent. However, you cannot expect them to carry out entertaining tricks for Lhasa Apsos are not suited for these kinds of training, although you can reward them with every favorable accomplishment. They are smart enough, however, to carry out and abide by your rules but abstain from using hurtful language for Lhasa Apsos will take these in to heart and may cause them to be withdrawn and disconcerted.

For thousands of years, the Lhasa Apsos have served as companions to monks and as watchdogs of monasteries. They have a sensitive and keen sense of hearing and a cunning instinct for differentiating friends from strangers. Do not confuse them as guard dogs but if we’re talking about watching intently and barking viciously then Lhasa Apsos are all that.

Because of incorrect training and maltreatment, Lhasa Apsos frequently fall into the Small Dog Syndrome, a human induced negative behavior prompting the dogs to act as the leader of humans. This syndrome exhibits inordinate and fierce barking, a short temper towards children and other animals, impatience, and unguided distrust towards humans. Lhasa Apsos are generally none of these misbehaviors and will be saved from such negativity if given the proper mental and physical exercise everyday.

Lhasa Apsos imperatively require frequent shampooing, lotioning, and weekly regimens of brushing and combing in order to keep their locks in place and untangled. Left for days, they can become mottled with brittle and ensnarled furs that are definitely difficult to fix. Caring for Lhasa Apsos’ hair is quite a job so if you’re not inclined for this type of maintenance then I suggest you choose another breed.

They may look comical in their cascading floor-length stringy hairs and hair-blinded curious eyes but Lhasa Apsos are quite adamant and unyielding which may cause a chase sometimes. The good thing is, they are happy dogs, amiable to children and other creatures, and extremely loyal companions. What’s more, if you don’t much like the outdoors then you will be pleased with Lhasa Apsos for they, too, would rather enjoy little jaunts indoors.

Lhasa Apsos lived for centuries in the compounds of Tibetan mountain range. But in 1901, Mrs. A. Mclaren of England introduced the breed to an entire new world and quickly gained popularity. In the year 1930’s, the breed first came to the US and had been a favored companion of millions ever since.

Good and Simple Dog Training Aids

by John Savage

Training your dog is no easy task; any pet owner can tell you that. While many dogs are very eager to please their owners, the bottom line is that they really don’t always understand what it is that you are saying and they have very, very short attention spans. These factors can make things difficult for even the most patient of owners, but before you are tempted to throw in the towel, let us consider some simple and basic dog training aids that you can use to help you along the way.

One of the best dog training aids that you can employ is to emphasize rewarding your dog for what he or she does right rather than simply punishing your dog when he or she does something wrong. Dogs crave attention and approval from their owners and will do just about anything to get it. If you want your dog to learn potty training, reward her when she goes in the right spot in the yard just as much as you scold her for going anywhere else. Many people neglect to include this positive reinforcement as part of their dog training aids arsenal, but that approval and affection can go a long way toward getting your dog to do what you want her to do!

Now there are some training aids on the market which you can buy, some quite frankly being much better than others. Expert dog trainers are now turning away from choke collars and chains saying that they are quite ineffective for the task, as well as being harmful. What is still held in high esteem however is a good strong collar and lead, one which you can give a gentle tug to and get your dogs attention without causing any discomfort. A dog needs to be reminded of what they can and cannot do, and a good lead will help with this. Some people like to use a muzzle in order to try and control barking both when out, and when at home, but we shopuld never forget that barking is something that comes naturally to a dog.

One of the things that I find very satisfying is to sit down and groom my dog with a simple grooming brush. They do not cost much at your local pet store but they can give big rewards. Not only will your dog look good, but it will help them to develop a calm nature. Give it a try and see what I mean. While you are at the pet store purchase a couple of chewy toys, you will be amazed at how much fun both of you will have playing with them, and the bonus is a tired dog that does not get into mischief!

Let me say in conclusion a few words about the bathing of your dog which although at first sight might seem rather an onerous task, can actually be quite enjoyable for both of you. Treat it as a training excercise, and in time you both will come to look forward to it. Number one priority is to make sure you use only shampoo designed for dogs,do not be tempted to use your own shampoo, and then complete the excercise by useing a conditioner which again must be designed for dogs. Have fun, and your dog will enjoy it too.

Bichons: The High Fashioned and Classy Pets

by Jason Greive

Your search for a creature that’s elegantly poised and evidently glamourous ends with the Bichon (bee-shon). This precious animal is the best pet for you if you want a fashionable and approachable pet that will amaze and thrill people during social gatherings. During such events, this shiny, curly, and thickly pelted animal will charm more and yap less.

Standing at 9-12 inches, this curly creature is perfect for cuddling and pick-and-go moments. They are so amazingly little you can easily slip them in a big bag. Their elegantly shiny and curly fluffs are 3-4 inches thick yet they are amazingly hypo-allergenic- they’re perfect even for those who have allergies!

This pet has such an obvious happy disposition and it’s conspicuous through its freely wagging tail and inquisitively expressive dark eyes. When it walks, it moves with an effortless grace and precise steps. And like a truly glamorous dog, its gait demonstrates an erect and royal gracefulness.

An early start at good behaviour and good manners trainings will make these animals plausible around people at common outings. You wouldn’t have troubles in training them for they are intelligent, naturally loving and sociable. They want to see everyone happy but they, too, long for a family that will include them to everything especially family outings and gatherings.

This soft and curly ball of a creature is bold, high spirited, and independent and you wouldn’t normally expect such characteristics from a pet as small as it. They may be tiny compared to other ginormous breeds but they are no less than self-assured, cheerful, and easy to live with. Placed beside other dogs and pets, they will do just fine and will interact without putting up a fight.

The Bichon, although not so admirable in size, have an surprisingly tireless energy and therefore make great playmates with children. They are all parallel in energy and spirit and so having them play together is a good idea. And knowing that Bichons are peaceful pets, you will never worry fights between them and other pets and other people.

Energetic dogs, such as the little Bichon, need a dose of daily walks. Without this regular exercise, the chances of behavioral problems will most likely afflict them. To be sure they are kept busy at the right times, be with them for a short walk and once in a while, let them loose for a frolic at a safe open area or a wide space.

Their pelts may come in hues of powder white, gray, cream or apricot but the things that keep them shiny and magnificent are regular grooming and once in a month bathing. Stray hairs may cover their eyes and ears from time to time so always keep a blunt pair of scissors handy for trimming. Professional pet groomers are also of great help so try to take the Bichons there atleast once per month.

Springers are divided into two diverging lines: show dogs and field dogs. It is perhaps in this breed that the great division in appearance between the working and show lines is most apparent, for the two seem to be almost completely different breeds. Field Springers are grown specifically for hunting and field trial work, while bench Springers or show dogs are reared mostly for conformation shows.

This breed works greatly with pet owners and trainers, due to their amicable, sweet nature and intrinsic ability to feel comfortable around people. The English Springer Spaniel takes to water like a fish, so expect him to get wet and muddy on occasion! This dog is best matched with a trainer who employs a soft but steady hand, and is able to clearly set rules and a fixed structure to adhere to.

To sum it all up, the English springer spaniel is friendly with other pets, such as cats or ferrets. Due to their innate hunting instinct, they may need additional training if they are to be housed with animals such as birds, whom they hunt in the field. In general, this full spirited, playful and happy animal will bring humor and heart to your home: the sprightly English springer spaniel is a superb hunting dog and family pet.

While show dogs have longer fluff, more pendant ears and dangling tails, field dogs have shorter, coarser fur. Their ears are less pendulous, and they tend to look more feral. They are chosen firstly for their trainability, hunting ability, and sense of smell rather than their physical look, which is why there is a noted difference between a field Springer and a show Springer.

In sum, the English Springer Spaniel gets along with other pets, such as ferrets or cats. If they’re going to be in the same household as pet birds, however, they may require additional training as they intrinsically and instinctively hunt these. Alongside its great hunting skills, the delightful English Springer Spaniels energy, lively good nature and inherently happy spirit will inject a good dose of cheer and character into your family and household.

Six Steps to a Happy Beagle.

by Bob Moore

Anyone who owns a beagle knows it can be extremely headstrong. But that doesn’t always have to be the case. They are an extremely loving breed. Good training is the key to a loyal, well-behaved dog, especially one so motivated by smell. Here are six things to consider when training any dog in general, but a beagle in particular:

1. Start early. From the time he or she is a puppy, training can begin. Put the dog on a feeding schedule to assure it eats at the same times each day. It’s never too early to get your dog used to strict schedules. Also, if you begin to reward good behavior early, the greater the likelihood your dog will develop fewer bad habits.

2. Learning simple commands early is good. “Stay,” “sit,” and “come” might seem like simple commands, but the earlier they respond to these, the easier it is to train them later. Remember, a beagle is a pack dog. It wants to be the leader. The sooner you let him know you’re the pack leader, the more readily he will respond to your commands, rather than the other way around.

3. The best training sessions are the short ones. Even with as little as 5 to 10 minutes twice a day, you should see amazing results. Remember, beagles can get unfocused very quickly, especially because of their desire to follow smells. If the sessions are short and entertaining, he’ll want to learn.

4. Don’t abuse your dog. We all get frustrated occasionally. It’s human nature. But to take it out on the dog will only have the reverse effect. Physical punishment can make him more aggressive and cause him to be more fearful of you. It stands to reason that he won’t do what you want him to do if he’s afraid.

5. Use positive reinforcement. Dogs like treats, and they especially like to know they’re being rewarded for making you happy. And, being a hound, the beagle is motivated by food. The key here, though, is to not let your dog see the reward before you give a command. The dog will see it as a form of bribery and will obey only when the reward is in view.

6. Beagle-appropriate training methods work best. Use a beagle’s natural tendencies to your advantage. These dogs are bred to hunt and track, obviously having an incredible sense of smell. If you can incorporate that into your training, you’ll experience a higher success rate. Anything involving running, retrieving, or discovering buried objects will be much more fun for him.

Can beagles be difficult? Of course they can, just as other breeds can be. But if you stick with these basic guidelines, you’ll find that it can be an enjoyable experience for both of you, and you’ll get a well-behaved beagle out of it at the same time.
