Ways To Keep Your Home Warm

by Lisa Condrey

Everyone seems to be concerned with saving money and saving energy. One of the biggest winter home expenditures is heating costs. Hopefully we can come up with some valuable resources for keeping your home warm.

Eliminating drafts can be one of the best ways to warm up your home and save on heating. Check your walls, and doors and windows for areas where heat may escape and cold may get in.

When you find the drafts you can use weather stripping to seal up the draft. If there is a draft under a door it?s easy to throw down a draft blocker or a rolled up towel. Some people get creative and do all kinds of creations with plastic, sheets, tape, etc. You?ll have to follow your budget and tastes on that one.

Thick cloth and furniture can also help insulate rooms. You can put up curtains and wall hangings. Drafty floors can also be insulated with rugs and carpets. Even some soft cushy pillows and throws will help absorb the cold.

Improvements in insulation techniques make it worthwhile to spend the money and have a professional come out and insulate your walls and attics. If you have an older drafty home this can be a worthwhile investment.

Get a digital thermostat and set it properly so that your house doesn?t get overly cold, but heat isn?t wasted when rooms are empty. New digital thermostats have different settings for different times of the day and different days.

Proper maintenance on your heating system, will make it run more efficiently and last for years to come. Have your furnace checked yearly for cleaning and lubrication and normal adjustments.

One of my favorite ways to keep my home warm is by using a warm and cozy fireplace to supplement the central heating. This way the thermostat can be set lower while still keeping the central living area warm.

If you have wood burning fireplace you can make it more efficient with a gas or electric fireplace insert. This will also make it more environmentally friendly. You can also get a blower with your insert that will distribute the heat better.

Some clean burning gas fireplaces have blowers which help distribute the heat throughout the room. Once again helping to create that zone that helps to lower the temperature on the thermostat. Modern fireplaces and accessories have really come a long way.

Keeping your home warm makes for the most enjoyable winter. Saving energy and money also makes for a great winter. A fireplace is a great way to supplement home heating. If you don’t have a fireplace, an electric fireplace can be an inexpensive and portable option.

Try a Gel Fireplace for a Fast and Easy Fire

by Paul Cameron

Lots of people think about installing a fireplace in their house. However, when they start investigating what’s involved in doing so, they quickly become overwhelmed. They realize that they’ll need to tear down walls and cut a hole in the roof for the chimney. There is also a lot of maintenance required for a wood burning fireplace.

But now there’s a simpler approach to installing a fireplace in your home. It’s known as a gel fireplace, and for many people it’s the ideal answer.

Many people these days are choosing this leading edge style of fireplace, and for lots of good reasons. Cleaning up after the fire is minimal because it doesn’t produce smoke, soot, or fumes. Stockpiling wood and cleaning up soot and ashes will be a thing of the past. You won’t have to buy a wide range of fireplace tools and accessories to maintain the unit. All you need to do in order to enjoy the warmth of a fire is to light up a can of fuel.

A gel fireplace is completely different from your conventional wood burning or electrical fireplace. They create a real fire by burning a gel that’s produced from grain alcohol. This product burns cleanly and produces a real flame with none of the usual mess. Gel fireplaces usually hold three fuel cans, with each container burning for approximately three hours. The gel even makes the crackling noise of a wood burning fire and there are scent sticks available you can add to your canisters.

A ventless gel fireplace requires no hookups, gas lines or construction. Once you get it home, it takes less than an hour to assemble and can be placed in any room of your home. It can also be moved around if you’re redecorating your home. Some models can be hung on a wall. Or you can buy a fireplace insert for your existing fireplace, and still enjoy the advantages of a mess-free fire.

There are no fumes or smoke produced by a ventless gel fireplace. However, they do release a small amount of carbon monoxide into the air, although the amount is so minute that there is no cause for concern. These fireplaces must pass rigorous safety tests with regard to their output of this gas.

Gel fireplaces are easy to maintain. As well, they are among the most cost effective and energy efficient means of heating a small space. Because there is no flue, all the heat is projected into the room. Be aware, though, that while they do provide warmth, they are not meant to be a primary heating source for your home.

A ventless gel fireplace can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars up to two thousand dollars for a high end product. If you have a busy lifestyle but still want the elegance and warmth of a fire, these fireplaces are well worth the money.
