Baby Bedding Sets - What You Need

by Bee Fraley

When you first bring home your baby, items like comforters, quilts and pillows aren’t necessary.

These sets often come with a bumper too and you might have heard or read conflicting information on them. In the end it comes down to the choice that you make.

If you do choose to use a bumper, it is better to use one that is rather thin and not thick and fluffy. This will make it less of a suffocation hazard.

To avoid suffocation, all your baby really needs in the first 12 months is a sheet, mattress, and a crib skirt for aesthetics. Avoid anything fluffy and heavy in your baby’s crib.

If you want to make sure your baby is comfortably warm, consider getting an organic blanket for swaddling or an organic cotton sleep sac that also wraps up snugly around your baby and doesn’t present a suffocation hazard.

So, what do you do with the comforter or quilt that came in the baby bedding set? They make great accessories for your baby’s nursery.

You probably bought a bedding set that matches the theme of your nursery and can now display the quilt on the nursery wall or simply hang it on a quilt rack or over the crib’s side when your baby isn’t sleeping there.

If you purchase a complete set in the beginning, you will not have to worry about finding the matching items later when your toddler can use the comforter.

On the other hand, if you want to keep it simple in the beginning and buy only the necessary bedding items, you can later freshen up the nursery design with a toddler bedding set.

Making up your Nursery

by Francis Layse

One of the first things you get to start when you find out that you are going to have a baby is setting up the nursery. When it’s your first time too, there is so much excitement surrounding the birth that will be coming. Setting up a nursery is a very fun experience that shouldn’t add extra stress to your life. You can actually not need to finish the full room before you bring the baby home. But you can come up with design ideas and start a little simple adding on as you go and find other dcor you want to add in.

If you know the sex of the baby, it might make it easier to choose the theme and style for the nursery. If you are someone whom doesn’t want to find out then choose anything which is natural like greens, yellows, and even a few blues. You also can choose a great boarder which is gendered to either sex of the baby. Try Winnie the Pooh or even any other animal theme.

Figure out what kind of materials you want to use. Like what kind of crib will you get, a wood one, metal or plastic? You have to think of what will look good, but will also be safe for your children. With wood it’s a beautiful look, but one that can cause a baby to get splinters. The same thing with metal, it’s so unattractive, it doesn’t look good at all. Plus if you use plastic it’s not always sturdy, and over an amount of time could break. This is why you should add some bumper pads, and padding to the crib. Wood with some beautiful sheets and bedding work perfect, be sure that everything is fire retardant. Plus it should easily fit inside the crib, and the use of any colored in a bed is fine. Check out different catalogues or places online to find the right bedding that will work in your home. When planning the dcor you may run into a problem with not being able to pick only one theme, simply mix a few different sets together. Chose a shape theme, they are easy to do and a lot of fun.

You should also consider a rug for your nursery. You can find small rugs specifically designed for infant nurseries, or you could just pick a beautiful full size rug. This is an important element in decorating a baby’s room. Rugs provide softness to little knees and hands as your baby learns to crawl and walk. It also protects your carpet from the many stains that parents encounter over the first year. Choose a rug that can be easily cleaned and avoid white or light colored rugs that will show every drop of spilled juice or crushed crackers

Think about how long your baby will be using the room as you decide on a theme. Will your ten-year-old hate you for putting Eeyore on his wall? How often are you willing to redecorate the room? Don’t forget, as your baby gets older, toys and clothes will come and go. Stuffed animals will accumulate and take over your house if you don’t plan carefully. Design your baby’s room with storage space for the future.

If your newborn will be sharing a room with its older sibling, try making each part of the room their own space. Choosing two different color themes will work well in a room if you incorporate a few of the same colors on each side of their designs. You can also have your older child help decorate the room so they feel they have a part in choosing what they want their design to look like. Just remember a nursery will get a lot of use when this little bundle of joy is born so you want to make it cozy and relaxing.

Essential Newborn Baby Clothes

by Paula Heron

Anticipating the arrival of a new baby is highly exciting and also demanding. In addition to making sure the nursery is set up and equipped, one major job is to make sure you have enough newborn baby clothes.

Now that there are stores like Babies r Us where every item you could possibly need to welcome your new home is available there is no need to trudge around lots of stores. And increasingly, more and more parents are using the internet to buy the necessary baby goods.

Buying baby equipment is fairly straight forward you need: 1 crib, 1 stroller and 1 car seat, obviously you are expecting a multiple birth the numbers will increase accordingly. But if you are a first time parent how do you know how many baby clothes your baby will need for the first few weeks?

There is no definitive number of clothes you need for your new baby whether they are baby boy clothes or baby girl clothes. Experienced moms would suggest that practical, easily laundered baby clothes make life a lot simpler in the first few weeks. Baby clothes that are easy to put on and make diaper changing easier are good.

A newborn baby doesn’t need a lot of fancy clothes, in fact, practicality is the order of the day where babies are concerned. So what items are considered practical and essential? Here is a list of the clothes considered necessary in a basic layette:

* 5-10 onesies - you may want more, the plain ones are great under tops and pants and there are some really cute ones for the warmer weather.

* Baby one piece sleeper suits: 5-10 of these, which are ideal in the first few weeks for wearing during the day.

* Baby gowns: 4 or 5 because they are invaluable when you’re up in the night dealing with diaper changes. I would have made great use of these gowns when I had newborn babies.

* To soak up the dribble and drool that newborn babies produce, get 5-10 bibs.

* Lots of burp cloths - these are a must if you don’t want to have to change your clothes as often as you change the baby’s.

* 5 pairs of socks - little feet get cold even in a warm climate.

* Hats: 2, and choose which type of hat (for example, sun hats or knitted hats) depending on the season and the weather in your part of the country.

* Coat - depends on what the climate is like when the baby is born.

* 2-3 hooded towels - makes drying baby’s hair easier.

* Avoid the scratches that babies are so good at inflicting on themselves by having at least two pairs of cotton mittens.

How many of each of these types of clothes you need will depend on how frequently you’re able to do the laundry, so please don’t regard the recommended numbers on this list as exact. In addition, you may want to have additional clothes for special occasions. However, I recommend that you treat what I’ve shown in this list as an essential set of newborn baby clothes so that the day to day diaper changing and dressing jobs are as easy as they can be.
