Why Do Many People Prefer Purebred Dogs

by Ferdinand Emy

In recent times, dog breeds acknowledged by kennel clubs adhere to very rigorous standards. Despite the fact that these standards are so rigorous, they are subtle,to the extent of being invisible to many people. Even when you go to a dog breeder, and request from him or her to let you to see his or her show quality puppies and pet quality puppies; both of which are purebreds, you will not be able to tell the difference at all.

Even those that are pet quality, purebred dogs can be pretty expensive. This is a result of the fact that it is highly costly to raise them, and also because when you purchase a purebred dog, you have a guarantee of how the dog will be like when it grows up physically and behaviourally.

Notwithstanding, some dog breeders dont think that the breeding process is through, and they seek to make new breeds by crossing purebred dogs from new breeds. These mixed dog breeds are created intenionally to get the optimal characteristics of the parents.

These mixed dog breeds are not constantly prosperous. Because some genes are recessive, and others are dominant, the result is not always the one the breeder wanted and the pups might end up with one or more bad traits from either or both parents. What Is More, first generation mixed dog breeds can vary greatly from litter to litter, even with the same type of parents. It is also not unusual to have puppies of the same litter with various characteristics in form, size, color, and hair.

Because of this, it takes many generations to produce true mixed dog breeds that will consistently give the same features, even 2nd, third or 4th generation puppies will occasionally give a nasty surprise by showing a trait that managed to stay recessive up until that moment.

All The Same, many mixed dog breeds have exhibited consistence and have attained popularity. Perhaps the most famed of these mixed dog breeds includes the mixing of poodles.

Mixed poodle breeds are popular due to the fact that they result in individuals with a coat that sheds very little and that make very small dander, as well as strong hypoallergenic properties, which they obtain from their poodle parent. In addition, they get at least one good trait from the other parents breed. For instance, the Cockapoo displays the loving and social tendency of the Cocker Spaniel.

Notwithstanding, despite the gains or lineage of mixed dog breeds, big kennel clubs refuse to acknowledge them. This is not surprising, given how strict they are in their rules and selections.

Natural is Best

by Kathy Davison

I was listening to the local N.Ireland radio station on my way back from college and they had our super Vet answering questions for people who were phoning in about their dogs. One of the questions was something I had been looking at only hours earlier. “Why do Dogs Eat grass”?I came upon this information while writing an article on “The Pros and cons of natural feeding” and I had been reading the various theories of why dogs eat grass.

Many believe that it aids digestion and others that it is to supplement the dogs diet as the commercially produced dog food does not have all the nutritional requirements that the dog needs. Of course the other theory is that the dog likes the taste!..that’s my theory. There is now an abundance of information around about the benefits of feeding your dog a more natural diet than the commercially produced food that lines our supermarket shelves. Go onto the Internet and type into google “feeding your dog” you will find many articles and websites that will offer help and information on how to feed your dog. When you research a little deeper you will be shocked and horrified at an industry that is self-regulated and offers up disgusting ingredients to be used as a source of protein - Euthanized cats and dogs ,diseased cattle, road accident animals and other sources that are not fit for consumption. You might question this information but the research is well documented and also verified by scientific tests. See for yourself.

If you feel that you would like to feed your dog naturally then you will find the summary below useful

PROS of natural feeding.

1. Healthier dog, so fewer trips to the Vet

2. A much happier dog

3. A dog with good strong, clean teeth with no gum disease

4. A dog with pleasant smelling breath

5. A dog who behavior isn’t hyped up by artificial food.

6. a dog whose “waste product” is much less offensive and much easier to pick up.!

CONS of natural feeding

1. Possible risk of impaction-very rare but could happen.

2. Arguing the case for natural feeding with your Vet. try and convert him or her.

3. When you first start it takes a little more thought and time than feeding processed food…but it gets easier very quickly

4. You may occasionally notice a very slight smear of blood in the feces. this is usually caused by a small piece of undigested bone scratching as it is eliminated.

5. If you are changing over from feeding a processed artificial diet,it is not unusual for your dog to have an upset stomach for a couple of days. This is because the stomach of the dog has to unlearn how to make the best of a bad job, coping with cooked and processed foods. Once you start feeding the raw diet the stomach will quickly start working at full efficiency again.

Your Child And First Pet To Get

by Jeremy

Are you sick of getting your child pestering you to get a pet? Well it looks like most parents will run into this pet issue at least once in their parenthood. While your child may think it is fun and cute to own a pet, you as a parent can take this chance to teach them how to be a responsible person. For starters, it is best to start out with a pet animal that is easy to maintain and smaller in size. Dogs and cats tend to be harder to maintain, but never the less it still depends on your child’s likes and dislikes of certain animals (and even allergies).

If you want to get a small pet for your child, then you might want to look into gerbils. They are animals that live in the desert. Clean and easy to upkeep, this is the ideal pet animal for small children. These creattures like to interact with their kind, so it is also a great idea to buy them in pairs. Just make sure that if you are choosing a male and female gerbils, you are prepared to take care of their little offsprings!

You’ll need a large tank with wood shavings in it for the little creatures to burrow in. Buy some digging toys as well as it complements the creatures’ digging habits. Gerbils can take vegetables like lettuce their lifespan is usually about three years. You can purchase at pet stores quite inexpensively.

Another alterative to gerbils are the guinea pigs. They are also small creatures and easy to upkeep. Again, buy them in pairs if you like as these creatures like to interact with each other. For their living habitat, you will need to get a large tank and then litter the area inside with grass and sand. Guinea pigs like to dig around as well though they tend to be more timid. For dietary needs, guinea pigs take food that has high fiber. Their lifespan is usually about six years.

For slighter larger pets, but still small enough for your child, mice can be a good option as well. Take note though getting female mice are better as male mice tend to fight among themselves if left unattended in their cage. Get a wire-mesh type of cage with plenty of breathing space as their living quarters. You can add tunnels and related tunnelling toys for the micce to play with. Get them things that they can chew on as it is a particular habit of theirs to chew on things.

These little creatures are harder to maintain though as compared to the previous two. But at the same time, it also gives your child a good exercise in learning responsibility while they are young.

Reasons To Own Dog Cage

by Donald Mihajlov

Many pet owners choose to let their pets roam free around the house all hours of the night, while others choose to buy cages to place them in. Those who are used to letting their pets explore often refuse to buy any type of cage for their pet. Some people might ask why buy a dog cage? Dog cages are a relatively cheap way of training a pet a particular discipline.

There are many places that have dog cages for sale so do check the major retail stores and pet outlets and you will find one that suits your budget. You can also find great deals on the internet, so do a Google search to find one that suits both your taste and budget. If you do drive, you can always check the garage sales that are around your town and you might just be able to find what you are looking for.

Training schools for dogs can be quite costly and if you choose to enrol your pet in one, perhaps do so only for a short time. Cages are an excellent way to place rules and restrictions on your pet. If your pet becomes unruly and disobedient, simply place it in the cage for a time out.

Depending on what type of dog cage you choose, make sure to lay some old blankets inside as a way to provide warmth and comfort to the family pet. Toss in some toys and bones and use the cage at night, if you don’t like your pet roaming around the house.

Dog cages are reasonably priced so a good idea would be to invest in a larger, more expensive one for home and a cheaper, but well made plastic carrier that can be used to travel short distances, such as to the vet’s for a check-up.

The Great Dog Training Deliberation - To Crate Train Or Not To Crate Train?

by Terry Zinndell

There is still a lot of debate among pet owners as to whether crate training dogs is a good idea. Crating, if you’re unfamiliar with the term, is the practice of placing your dog in a cage for a period of time during the day or night. The cage is generally made from metal or plastic and is very small ” barely large enough for the dog to turn around in.

On the pro-crating side, people who use crate training say that it is a place which a dog can call its own ” a refuge from unpleasant sounds and the rambunctious behavior of children. As mentioned above, they also argue in favor of crating a dog as part of the housebreaking process, averring that this trains a dog to wait until they are taken outside to eliminate.

Those who oppose crate training argue that crating a dog prevents it from acting in accordance with its instincts, keeping the animal from exploring the sights, sounds and smells of its environment.

The no-crating crowd point to those instances where puppies will go ahead and soil themselves while in the crate, despite the arguments made by the proponents of crate training. They make the argument that crate training is really more about the owner’s convenience than it is the best interests of their pet.

Both sides want only the best for their pets and the arguments made by both sides have merit. There has been some research into crate training, but there is no hard and fast answer, other than that if done with care and common sense crate training can be beneficial to some dogs and has no ill effect.

No one, not even the biggest backers of crate training would say that keeping a dog in a crate for an extended period of time is a good thing. You should never keep your dog in a crate for more than four hours ” any longer than this is really too much time to deprive an animal of the ability to move freely and to take care of nature’s call.

There is also the concern that a caged dog can accidentally injure itself. It’s important to make sure that the dog’s collar will not snag on the cage and that the cage is free of sharp edges, as well as that the cage is sturdy enough not to tip over or break when pushed by your dog.

Pets which are accustomed to the crate do however tend to travel better than do others. Since they are already accustomed to spending time in close quarters, they’ll be far calmer when traveling.

Many pet owners maintain that unless you are making a permanent relocation you should leave your pet at home, since they will be happier in a familiar place. If you need to take your pet along on a trip, make sure to use a very well built cage which won’t tip and will keep things from getting in, not just out.

There’s not going to be an agreement on crate training in the near future; that much is certain. It’s best to decide for yourself. Try crating your dog for a couple of weeks, followed by leaving the door of the crate open and let your dog vote with their feet ” do they steer clear of the crate or do they choose it as a favored spot for their naps? Let your dog have a say and you’ll have a happier pet.

Cancer in dogs

by Cheryl L. True

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer for your beloved canine companion can be devastating news. Fortunately, dogs respond well to many forms of cancer treatment.

There are different treatments and therapies for different types of canine cancer. Each pet is considered on an individual basis for which array of treatments will be most effective. There are a number of different vitamins, herbs, minerals and other supplements that are known to help.

Cancer in dogs most commonly affects the skin, bones and internal organs. Research is constantly bringing to light new effective treatments. Obviously, the earlier the cancer is detected, the better the chances for a successful treatment. Various types of X-rays and CAT scans (no pun intended) are helpful in locating cancerous tumors and other conditions.

Chemotherapy is used for some types of canine cancer usually in combination with some kind of surgery. Radiation therapy is most effective for tumors that have not yet spread to other parts of your dog’s body. This will help shrink or eliminate the tumors.

Severe toxic side-effects are rare when radiation therapy is used on dogs, affecting less than 5 percent of the animals receiving it. Some dogs may experience itchy skin as a side effect and may be given medications to keep them from scratching themselves too much. There may be hair loss at the spot where the radiation is directed but the hair normally grows back after treatment.

Cancer can develop without any symptoms so as a dog owner you should be vigilant, especially with older dogs or with breeds that have a history of inherited cancer. Annual checkups are essential but there are also things you can check at home, including any unusual swelling that does not heal, weight loss, loss of appetite, sores that don’t heal, general depression and loss of energy, difficulty breathing and difficulty performing normal day-to-day activities like eating, drinking, urinating or defecating.

Recently, the canine genome sequence was completed and gene maps are being used for extensive research to help prevent and cure cancer in both dogs and humans, especially bone cancer, skin cancer and lymphoma - all of which are strikingly similar in both people and canines.

Small genetic changes can have a proportionally huge effect in dogs. Because dogs have a much smaller gene pool than humans, cancers (as well as many other dog traits) can be switched on by very few genes — sometimes just one.

Cat Litter Mats = Clean Savings!

by Ned Dagostino

Every cat owner must face the problem of dirty floors especially around the cat’s litter box. The cat’s litter box is a necessary evil as it is. Added to that is the problem of having the cat track dirt over your clean floors every time it uses the litter box. Dirt apart, the flooring and floor coverings also take a beating from the dirt. Expensively done parquet floors can get damaged from the litter particles that are tracked onto it. Rare carpets can get damaged likewise.

Even the cushions and the upholstery on your sofa sets can get soiled with these litter particles if your cat has a penchant for jumping onto the furniture, which most cats do! This is doubly damaging. First of all you have to get a professional cleaner to come to the house to clean the upholstery and the carpets, an expensive business. Secondly, the frequent cleaning, though professionally done, takes its toll on the longevity of these items, and you’ll find them getting threadbare and unusable much before their regular lifespan. This means replacement of these items which is frightfully expensive. So what can be done? The solution is very straightforward: use a cat litter mat.

The cat litter mat is placed directly in front of the cat’s litter box. This localises the litter debris to just around the litter box. Cat litter mats are made of texturized rubber. They are designed to wipe your cat’s paws as it exits the box. The textured surface helps to collect the debris of the litter. Your flooring is protected, and your repeated house cleaning is minimized to a great extent.

Your cat benefits too. It does not have to clean its paws so often. This prevents or restricts debris of the litter from getting ingested by the cat.

Though they are very effective you may not want to buy a commercial cat litter mat. You can make up your own from an old rubber bathmat, and cover it with blankets or rugs that are ready to be trashed. Tufted or looped rugs are ideal for the purpose. The same can be said for pieces of old carpets. Just make sure that you can wash and clean these pieces of blankets, rugs, or carpets easily. Because they’ll need to be cleaned often otherwise they’ll start smelling as bad as the dirt they pick up.

A cat litter mat, home-made or ready made, is an ideal way to keep the floor free of dirt from the litter box. The whole house benefits from this. The house is cleaner, fresher, healthier. The flooring and floor coverings don’t get damaged. You save money by avoiding repeated visits by professional cleaners. You save money by not having to replace your expensive upholstery, carpets and flooring. You save a lot of time and effort by not having to clean up ever so often.

Your family will also benefit when your cat does not soil the house, upholstery and bedding. No dirt translates to cleanliness, and that spells health. Now who is going to say no to that? So, without more ado, let’s go get that cat litter mat and bid good riddance to litter debris!

Arthritis and your pet

by Cheryl L. True

Arthritis doesn’t discriminate. It affects not only people of all ages — including children — but also strikes our furry friends too. If you’re a dog-owner, be sure to check your dog for signs of arthritis.

This common condition affects one in every five adult dogs in the United States and is one of the most common sources of chronic pain in pets.

How do you know if it’s arthritis? Your dog can’t tell you what’s wrong so take note of your pet’s non-verbal communication. It may its own way of telling you how bad things are.

Signs that your dog may have arthritis include favoring a limb, difficulty sitting or standing, sleeping more, stiff or sore joints, hesitancy to jump, run or climb stairs, weight gain, decreased activity or less interest in play, attitude or behavior changes, and being less alert.

If your dog has any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, see a vet for an arthritis evaluation which will involve a physical exam and possibly X-rays.

The best way to manage arthritis in your pet is to get an accurate diagnosis and start treatment plan as soon as possible.

Treating canine arthritis is similar to human arthritis and therapies may include:

A healthy diet and exercise plan to help maintain proper weight.

Effective drug therapy to relieve pain - this usually involves the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) - the most common treatment for arthritis in dogs.

Over-the-counter pet treatments containing either glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate or omega fatty acids may also be used. These may help relieve the symptoms of arthritis in dogs.

Follow your vet’s instructions and never give your dog human medication without checking with your veterinarian first. Certain medications can be toxic to dogs — particularly acetaminophen and ibuprofen — and a safe dose will differ between a greyhound and a dachshund.

No matter how you treat your dog’s arthritis, work closely with a veterinarian for best results.

If your dog or cat suffers from arthritis pain, don’t make it suffer any longer. Relieve joint pain, lubricate the joints, increase flexibility and improve mobility with this best aspirin for dogs.
